From an American perspective, this post feels like something out of time. It would have been right in line with our hopeful optimism 20 years ago, when progress felt inevitable as these structures that divide us were gradually worn away.

These days, these structures are being built and fortified around us. And for sure there are a lot of misunderstandings on "both [domestic] sides", and they've only been increasing. (n.b. it's important to focus on the authoritarian actions being carried out, rather than being misled by what you think might be achieved)

So about my only contribution to you is to hope that you told on to this optimism and gradually reform your government to be what you want. Because this coming century is shaping up to be a Chinese one. And as an American I really hate saying that, but at this point our self inflicted wounds are just too great and show no signs of stopping.

I have always enjoyed interacting with Chinese sellers while partaking in your manufacturing/engineering culture that my country willingly gave away [, friend]. Now that my country has willingly chosen to give away its world leadership, I can only hope that your larger culture will treat us as kindly.
